You don't need an hour-long routine to shift out of survival mode. Your nervous system responds to small, physical signals faster than it responds to logic - which is why "just calm down" never works, but these do.
1. The exhale count
Breathe in for 4 counts, out for 6. The longer exhale is what tells your body it's safe to stand down. Do it five times before you open your inbox.
2. Cold water on the wrists
Thirty seconds of cold water on your inner wrists activates a genuine physiological reset - no app required.
3. Name three things you can hear
Pulls you out of your head and back into your body. Simple, and it works in a parking lot as well as it works at your desk.
4. Touch something with texture
A ridged bracelet, a stone, the seam of your jeans - physical texture is a fast, portable grounding tool.
5. Drop your shoulders, twice
Most of us carry tension in the shoulders without noticing. Drop them once, wait five seconds, drop them again - the second drop is usually the real one.
None of these fix everything. They're not supposed to. They're just enough to get you through the next five minutes - and most days, that's the whole game.
